We recently completed some key component upgrades at Acrisure Stadium, working closely with representatives of the game day staff of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Pitt Panthers, as well as the Sports and Exhibition Authority.
Their facility now features an Evertz EQX router (expandable up to 288x288) and multiviewer system.
The intercom system from Riedel includes an Artist 1024 frame and a Connect Trio, along with expanded wireless coverage via the Bolero antennas and beltpacks.
A Ross Ultrix frame and Acuity switcher panel were added as well as new capabilities via Dante audio hardware.
Prior to opening day of the 2023 season, we finished a complete overhaul of the control room and equipment room at PNC Park. To coincide with their new HDR scoreboard, all of the video production system equipment had to be upgraded.
Having worked with the Pirates for many years, we were familiar with their workflow and the event operations staff. We used this insight to tailor the system design to meet their goals, introduce some new features and provide the potential to expand their game day show even more in the future.
The Pirates new system includes a large selection of products from Ross Video including an Ultrix frame, Acuity panel and several Xpressions to drive graphics content to the video board.
An Evertz EQX router (expandable up to 288x288) and multiviewer system was selected to handle the increased needs of their new workflow.
Content is captured in HDR format via Grass Valley LDX 96 cameras and Canon lenses. Some include the capability of High Frame Rate recording, which provides some great Slo Mo footage that is sent to the Evertz DreamCatcher replay system.
Wireless camera coverage in the ball park has been expanded with a new Wave Central RF system, and now accesses areas of the facility that were previously not reachable. This is also true of the new Riedel intercom coverage provided by an Artist Series Frame and Bolero wireless system.
This design-build project included replacing all of the existing Triax cabling throughout the facility with SMPTE fiber and working alongside Mitsubushi Electric and Clair Global, as they both upgraded their respective systems during the same offseason period.
We completed a 4K studio project in a newly renovated space inside the Student Union building at Duquesne University. The leadership at the school wanted to bring attention to their media arts and broadcast center that borders Academic Walk. We worked with the architects and contractors to design a head-turning studio enclosed in glass that really shows off the technology.
Students and visitors can't miss the 98" NEC 4K monitor on the back wall of the studio. The NewTek TC2 Elite switcher drives the broadcast shows that are shot with Panasonic AW-UE150K 4K PTZ cameras. The operators communicate with the ClearCom FreeSpeak II intercom system and using the AJA KUMO router and OpenGear converter cards, video and audio sources of any kind can be sent to the switcher and monitors.
We also took advantage of existing fiber between the Student Union and College Hall to connect this system with a secondary studio and control room via NDI, as well as to the student radio station using MultiDyne converters. Four Adobe edit and graphics systems are located in the control room, and elements are easily shared between all of the users.
We had the pleasure of providing consultation, design and integration services for a new facility-wide HD video and audio system at the acclaimed Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center in Midland, PA.
The studio and control room are used as a classroom teaching tool as well as a way to get media classes involved in producing content of student performances in several locations on campus.
A NewTek TC1 switcher system connected to an EditShare EFS shared storage system is the main media hub for live broadcasts and streams. Content becomes available to edit workstations and is automatically catalogued into the digital asset management system. Sony HXCFB80 Broadcast cameras are used for studio productions and communication is done through ClearCom FreeSpeak II digital wireless intercom.
Fiber between rooms and buildings paired with MultiDyne Tx/Rx units provided a way to transmit video and and audio from additional Sony BRCH900 PTZ cameras located in theaters and performance halls. And a Dante enabled SSL mixing console was integrated into the system to enhance and expand the recording and mixing possibilities even further.
Our work with the Big Ten Network has expanded beyond their headquarters in Chicago and into their Student-U flypack systems and their mobile acquisition (MICR) trucks.
We designed and built twelve mobile production systems in two different form factors for the individual schools within the Big Ten conference, to be used by the student-run production teams for events including wrestling, gymnastics, volleyball and more. The flypacks all utilized NewTek TC1 switchers with Vizrt’s graphics servers and 3Play replay systems.
Besides hosting a fieldshop to service and maintain the equipment in the existing MICR trucks, we also expanded the fleet this year. We adapted an existing design to incorporate new equipment and a refined workflow, centered around an Evertz 180x288 EQX router. Footage captured by Grass Valley LDX 82 Flex camera chains are transmitted back to the BTN control center in Chicago.
Most recently we designed and integrated a VidOvation IPTV system throughout the BTN facility and continued our work in their studio and control room.
We completed a brand-new studio and control room at Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio. They wanted a state of the art studio and control room that would be used for lecture capture, online course distribution and several other productions. The system was built around Sony triax cameras and a NewTek TriCaster 8000 production switcher. It also features a Clear-Com FreeSpeak II wireless intercom system, EditShare media storage and LTO 7 archiving.
We have had the pleasure of working with several regional Fox Sports (now Bally Sports) engineering teams over the past few years, designing and integrating multiple studios and control rooms in Cleveland, Cincinnati, St. Louis, Detroit and Atlanta. We have helped them relocate and rebuild their facilities while expanding and upgrading their video, audio and routing systems.
We worked closely with the engineering staff at Showtime’s Network Operations Center in Long Island, New York to help them integrate a new Core Routing System, which is now the back bone of their entire operation. This project included the installation of the new router, control panels and other support equipment relative to the system. We fabricated and installed all of the coax and network cabling across more than 70 equipment racks and multiple facility rooms. This work was performed in a systematic way to ensure that all 14 of Showtime’s networks never went off air, and made for a seamless transition from the old system to the new.
ADDITIONAL PROJECTS
WJBK TV - Fox Detroit
We upgraded their system and moved them into a new physical control room space while maintaining the functionality of the old room so they could stay on air. The original system now functions as a backup MCR.
West Mifflin High School
We installed an HDBaseT Datavideo streaming system with two PTZ cameras in the auditorium at West Mifflin High School. They can now record and stream performances, events and meetings.
KDKA TV - Pittsburgh
We integrated a new Sony switcher and Sony ELC system at KDKA TV. We also upgraded their Ross Tally, Evertz multiviewer, and other conversion equipment throughout their facility.
